This summer, come join the fun and explore one of Canada’s top Olympic Sports at Petrie Island in Orleans.  The Rideau Canoe Cub has teamed up with the Friends of Petrie Island, to offer an ecologically-themed two-week “Regatta-Ready” intro to competitive Sprint Kayak racing for athletes aged 9 to 12 years old. Over the two-week program, our certified coaches will guide you through the skills required to master basic balance and stroke techniques while you have fun in the sun!

Session A: June 29 - July 10, excluding July 1
Morning Sessions - Monday through Friday 9am-12pm

Session B: July 13 - July 24
Morning Sessions - Monday through Friday 9am-12pm

Session C: July 27 - August 7, excluding August 3
Morning Sessions - Monday through Friday 9am-12pm

NOTE! A minimum of 6 participants per session is needed in order for the session to run with a maximum of 12 in each session.

Fees:
  • $210 per 9 days sessions (A and C)
  • $237 per 10 days sessions (B)
Pre-Requisites:
  • Campers must be 9 -12 years old during the camp session
  • No paddling experience is required
  • Participants must demonstrate minimum swim ability, if campers cannot complete the swim assessment they will not be able to continue in the camp**
**Prior to getting in boats participants must show they have the ability to roll into the water and swim 50 metres (any stroke) and stay afloat (tread water) for 1 minute (as per the National Lifesaving Society Swim to Survive standard). Instructors will assess swimming ability on the 1st day of the program so please come ready to get in the water. Swim ability is assessed without a lifejacket or other flotation device. If your child is nervous about this process we welcome you to swim along with your child to ease the nerves

If interested, ask us about our swim assessment dates set prior to camp to help determine if your child needs to improve their swimming skills prior to camp starting. If your child takes the swim assessment on one of these dates and passes, they will not have to take it again on the first day of camp...unless they want to! The assessment will take place by the doc at the Rideau Canoe Club in the waters of Mooney's Bay supervised by a certified lifeguard. No registration is necessary for pre-assessment or for the camp prior to the pre-assessment.

What to bring to camp:

  • The canoe club will provide all paddling equipment.  Although Petrie Island has PFD’s for paddlers use, participants are welcome to bring their own.  PFD’s must fit ‘properly’ to be acceptable.
  • Two changes of clothing will be required; clothing should be comfortable, loose fitting and preferably made of quick drying fabric (they do get wet!).
  • Running shoes are required for dry-land practice activities.
  • Sun screen, water bottle, lunch and/or snacks are needed for each camp session.
